Build Custom GPT in 6 min. Step-by-Step Tutorial

[00:00] In this video, we’ll go through the
[00:01] basics of building a very simple GPT.
[00:04] The goal of this video is to not make
[00:05] anything complicated, just get an
[00:07] introduction and understand the
[00:09] different aspects and the different
[00:11] features of my GPT. And then later
[00:13] videos, we’re going to go ahead and
[00:14] create a more complicated one to provide
[00:17] more custom instructions. But for this
[00:19] one, this is going to be very basic,
[00:21] just an introduction of how the My GPT
[00:24] works. Uh so, let’s get started.
[00:30] So, we’re in the main chat.openai.com.
[00:33] So, you have to have ChatGPT 4, of
[00:35] course, the paid version, otherwise you
[00:37] won’t have access to My GPT. So, we’re
[00:40] here in the main page. I’m going to come
[00:41] here on the left-hand side and click on
[00:43] the explore section.
[00:45] And this is going to bring me to My
[00:47] GPTs. So, these are all the GPTs I’ve
[00:49] already built. As you can see, I’ve gone
[00:51] through and built quite a bit. Um so,
[00:53] obviously for you, this is going to be
[00:55] blank. Uh on the bottom here, these are
[00:57] all the recently used GPTs that you’ve
[00:59] chatted with. And then, of course, all
[01:01] the way down here, these are all the
[01:02] GPTs that are made by OpenAI. But we’re
[01:05] going to focus on the top here. I’m
[01:07] going to come over here and click on
[01:08] create a GPT.
[01:10] This is going to take me to this page.
[01:12] On the left-hand side, we have the
[01:14] create tab and the configure tab. We’re
[01:16] going to focus mainly on create tab and
[01:19] talk to the GPT builder to build our
[01:21] GPT. On the right-hand side is the
[01:23] preview tab. Again, as you’re building
[01:26] your GPT based on the conversation
[01:28] you’re having with the GPT builder,
[01:30] you’ll see those results being
[01:32] incorporated in the right side. And you
[01:34] can actually even test it out after we
[01:36] build it, so that way before publishing,
[01:38] you can see if you wanted to make any
[01:39] changes.
[01:41] So, I’m going to get started on the
[01:42] left-hand side here. Uh before we do
[01:44] that, actually, on the configure tab, as
[01:47] you can see right now, everything is
[01:48] blank. Don’t worry about all these
[01:50] things at this point. Like I said, I’ll
[01:51] do a more deep dive into the configure
[01:54] tab, because this is where the
[01:55] customization of GPT occurs. For now,
[01:57] let’s just focus on the create side.
[02:00] So, I’m going to go ahead and say I want
[02:01] to build a simple GPT about history. So,
[02:04] that way if I’m asking it questions
[02:06] about world history, it just gives me
[02:08] answers. So, I’m going to start by
[02:09] typing here. So, I said I want to build
[02:12] a GPT about world history. I’m going to
[02:14] press enter. And now, the GPT builder
[02:16] will actually interact with you and ask
[02:18] you further questions and update the
[02:20] behavior. So, as you can see, on the
[02:22] right-hand side, it already updated it
[02:24] based on just what I told it to do. So,
[02:27] now it’s going to keep asking you more
[02:28] questions to further customize it. So,
[02:30] it says a great choice. In order to make
[02:32] this GPT unique, it needs a name. So, it
[02:34] will suggest you a name. And if you
[02:37] don’t like it, you can change it to
[02:38] something else. So, I’m going to say,
[02:41] provide
[02:42] another name.
[02:45] So, you can say provide another name, or
[02:46] you can actually type your own name. So,
[02:48] if you have some kind of a name in mind,
[02:50] you can just say, uh name it this, and
[02:52] it’ll do that.
[02:54] How about Time Traveler Tutor? Would you
[02:56] like So, that’s That’s actually a pretty
[02:57] good name.
[03:00] Yes, that’s good.
[03:04] And now, as it’s building this, as it’s
[03:06] generating different things, right, the
[03:07] next step is it’s it’s going to generate
[03:09] a profile picture. So, it’s going to use
[03:11] DALL-E 3, which is owned by OpenAI as
[03:13] well.
[03:14] Um so, while it’s doing that, actually,
[03:15] on the right-hand side in the configure
[03:17] tab, as you can see, now it’s starting
[03:19] to build things out. Do you see, before
[03:21] this was blank, but now, as it’s having
[03:23] conversation with us, as it’s updating
[03:26] um
[03:27] the information that we’re providing to
[03:29] it, it will keep updating the behavior,
[03:32] and therefore, the configure tab will
[03:33] get populated. So, we’re going to go
[03:35] back. So, this is the profile picture
[03:37] that it generated. Um again, if you
[03:39] don’t like this, you can always ask for
[03:41] more, but for now, this looks good.
[03:44] All right. So, it’s going to keep asking
[03:46] you more questions to further specify
[03:48] the behavior of this particular GPT. So,
[03:51] now it’s saying, what kind of a specific
[03:52] topics or areas you want the history the
[03:55] GPT to specialize in, right? So, I’m
[03:57] just going to say a broad range for now.
[03:59] Again, this is I want to keep this as
[04:00] simple as possible. And for further
[04:03] videos, we’ll go ahead and actually
[04:04] customize the GPT and really get in the
[04:08] um
[04:09] details of how we can add more
[04:12] customization, how we can add more
[04:14] information to make this really stand
[04:16] out. So, now again, it’s going to ask
[04:17] you further questions. How do you want
[04:18] this to handle complex topics? So, I’m
[04:20] just going to say stick with the most
[04:21] most widely accepted interpretations.
[04:24] All right, great. Oh, one more thing I
[04:25] wanted to point out. So, sometimes when
[04:28] you’re interacting with the GPT builder,
[04:30] you might get errors, and one of the
[04:32] main reason is because OpenAI’s API has
[04:35] been down. And you can come here on
[04:37] status.openai.com,
[04:39] and you can actually see whether the
[04:41] systems are operational. So, as you can
[04:43] see, on the when it says red or yellow
[04:46] here, it usually means that the
[04:48] API is not working properly or ChatGPT
[04:50] is not working properly. So, that way
[04:52] you will be able to see what’s going on,
[04:54] cuz sometimes that’s kind of confusing
[04:56] when it doesn’t it gives you an error,
[04:57] and you don’t know what’s going on. But
[04:59] you can definitely come down here and
[05:00] see what’s going on. But so, right now,
[05:01] for November 17th, it looks like there’s
[05:03] no accidents. Everything looks good. So,
[05:06] I’m going to go ahead and finish this.
[05:07] Okay. So, now it’s pretty much done. So,
[05:09] now on the right-hand side, as you can
[05:11] see,
[05:11] we can now interact with it and actually
[05:14] go through the process of testing it
[05:15] out, just like a normal user would. So,
[05:17] these things right here, these are the
[05:19] suggested prompts. So, as you can we can
[05:22] change that on the configure tab here,
[05:24] the conversation starters. So, we can
[05:26] either if you don’t like any of these,
[05:28] or if you don’t want more than like two,
[05:30] let’s say, you can get rid of it very
[05:31] easily from here. And if you want to put
[05:33] something of your own, you can certainly
[05:35] suggest that as well there. Um the
[05:37] knowledge, again, we don’t I don’t want
[05:38] to focus too much on this particular
[05:40] video, but this is where if you want to
[05:41] upload specific files, so that way you
[05:44] could reference that, then you can
[05:46] definitely do that from here. But like I
[05:47] said, we’ll do that on another video.
[05:50] But for now, I think this is good enough
[05:52] to get you guys started. Um like I said,
[05:54] we’ll go through a more detailed version
[05:56] of of this, either update this or
[05:58] actually create a brand new one with
[06:00] more customization on another video. So,
[06:02] now in order to save this, you’ll just
[06:03] come here on top right corner and say
[06:05] publish. So, only me, you have option
[06:08] only me, people with link, and public.
[06:09] So, public is when the GPT store will
[06:11] come live, most likely end of November.
[06:14] But for now, I’m just going to say only
[06:15] me. And you just click confirm.
[06:18] And now, you’re able to interact with
[06:20] your GPT.
