[00:00] So, if you feel like online learning
[00:01] trends [music] sound exactly the same
[00:03] every single year, you know, AI,
[00:06] personalization, microlearning, you’re
[00:08] honestly not wrong. [music] Every
[00:10] January, it kind of just seems like it’s
[00:11] the same headlines with a new year kind
[00:13] of slapped on top. So, the reality I
[00:15] have from this is that the actual ideas
[00:17] don’t change. It’s just the way that
[00:18] we’re using them has. And that gap is
[00:20] basically between boring corporate
[00:22] training and online learning that
[00:24] actually works. Let’s have a look.
[00:27] [music]
[00:29] Hi. Hi everyone, Charlotte here. Good to
[00:31] see you. Or if you’re new, really nice
[00:32] to see you here. If you love the idea of
[00:34] hearing more about AI, [music]
[00:36] e-learning, and tech trends, then
[00:38] definitely subscribe cuz I’m here every
[00:40] single week bringing you guys content.
[00:42] Okay, let’s get straight into it. So,
[00:43] this isn’t a predictions video. This is
[00:45] about what learners are already
[00:47] experiencing when they do log into a
[00:48] platform. And it’s kind of just without
[00:50] even realizing it. And once you notice
[00:52] these shifts, you kind of can’t unsee
[00:55] them. So, I’m going to be sharing with
[00:56] you the top five online learning trends
[00:58] [music] currently today, but how it’s
[01:00] transforming. Not just the idea, but
[01:02] [music] what’s actually happening, why
[01:04] they work, kind of why they fail as
[01:06] well. What do you think the first one
[01:08] is? AI. But AI is not a headline
[01:11] anymore. We all know what it is.
[01:12] Everyone talks about it. It’s just norm.
[01:14] Learners don’t just think, I’m using AI.
[01:17] Learners think what does this platform
[01:19] seem to get me? You know, standard
[01:20] example, Netflix. You don’t just click a
[01:23] button and activate algorithm. You just
[01:25] open it and think why is this
[01:27] uncomfortably accurate? Why it just
[01:28] recommends programs to me tailored to
[01:31] what I like. So if you’ve ever used
[01:32] platforms such as UEM or Corsera, you
[01:35] watch one course, you’ll participate in
[01:37] it and then the platform kind of goes
[01:39] like okay I see you and then it oddly
[01:41] kind of recommends specific pathways to
[01:44] you. Let’s look at a sales rep for
[01:46] example. Let’s say they are on Udeed or
[01:48] any type of course site or LMS and they
[01:51] keep going back to negotiating courses
[01:53] and without asking the system anything
[01:56] the system gradually stops you know
[01:58] pushing on boarding content it starts
[02:01] recommending advanced negotiation
[02:03] scenarios and practice modules and when
[02:05] we’re looking at a workplace for example
[02:07] in the past I’ve used absorb LMS and we
[02:10] didn’t have AI tailored pathways so all
[02:12] the learners got exactly the same each
[02:14] and it wasn’t tailored So we don’t know
[02:16] what the learner is doing, what they
[02:18] click on, what they avoid. And that’s
[02:20] how AI works, it tailor it. And to be
[02:22] honest, I don’t know if you agree with
[02:24] me. And if if systems are not using
[02:27] this, it becomes very hard to be
[02:29] personalized to every single learner.
[02:31] And why do you think this works? This
[02:33] works because it removes friction. The
[02:35] learner doesn’t need to search or filter
[02:37] or even decide. The platform generally
[02:39] moves forward. Less effort, less
[02:41] decision, less fatigue, and momentum.
[02:44] But why does this also fail? I think it
[02:46] fails when platforms try too hard to
[02:48] show AI. It sometimes it recommendations
[02:51] kind of just feel random, repetitive. So
[02:53] be honest, this happens to me. Like I
[02:55] click on something out of curiosity and
[02:57] then I probably won’t ever click on it
[02:59] again, but YouTube or anywhere I am
[03:01] decides I like it and now my homepage is
[03:03] full of the same thing. Sometimes it
[03:05] just doesn’t come across helpful. It
[03:06] just comes across kind of annoying and
[03:08] creepy. I think it’s like, you know, for
[03:09] example, you completed a course, passed
[03:11] it, moved on, but it’s still got things
[03:13] popping up not relevant anymore. Make
[03:15] sure you stay until number five because
[03:16] that one I think is actually the most
[03:17] interesting because it’s not something
[03:19] that’s actually in the year yearly
[03:21] trend. The other four are, but the fifth
[03:23] one I think is a little bit new. We
[03:25] don’t really talk about it. It’s still
[03:26] ongoing. So, definitely stick around and
[03:28] listen to all five. So, trend number
[03:30] two, snack size. You know, short
[03:32] bite-size learning elements. It’s just
[03:35] like when you get a software update,
[03:36] you’re at work and you know it asks you
[03:38] to complete a 1-hour course. Instead, a
[03:40] 60-second pop-up video or a mini online
[03:43] learning e-learning course could just do
[03:45] the job. And in that moment when you’re
[03:47] so busy that’s all you need because a
[03:49] software update could just be a quick
[03:51] situation. Of course, if something is
[03:53] more in depth that you really do need to
[03:54] have that extra piece of learning
[03:56] materials, then of course it might be
[03:58] different. But a software update is
[03:59] something small that you may need just a
[04:01] few 30 seconds, 60 seconds, a couple of
[04:03] minutes, then bite-size learning enemas
[04:05] are great. So why does bite-size
[04:07] learning work? Cuz I think it respects
[04:09] of how people actually learn under
[04:11] pressure in short bursts and usually on
[04:14] their phone. Sometimes you just need to
[04:17] solve a problem now and all you need is
[04:19] a little bit of information. But why
[04:21] does it also fail? Sometimes it fails
[04:23] when you have microlearning content but
[04:25] with no purpose. you’re just doing it
[04:26] for the sake of having microlearning. Do
[04:28] you know what I mean? Short stuff
[04:30] doesn’t automatically mean useless. And
[04:32] we don’t just want short content that’s
[04:34] fluff and no relevance. And the
[04:36] important thing to note here is yes, we
[04:38] are tailoring our content to suit the
[04:40] learner. But if they don’t want to learn
[04:42] or not willing to learn, then even if we
[04:44] provide microlearning or longer courses,
[04:47] it’s all down to the individual. But we
[04:48] can certainly help the situation by
[04:50] giving those microlearning elements and
[04:52] then the learner decides if they want to
[04:54] or not, you know. Let’s go on to trend
[04:56] number three. Learning that flexes
[04:58] around you. So earlier I discussed AI
[05:01] and personalization, but this is more
[05:02] about branching diagrams. This is an
[05:04] example. If you kind of breeze through
[05:06] your quizzes, the system skips the
[05:09] basics. If you struggle, it slows down
[05:11] as examples and gives you more practice
[05:14] without asking you to choose anything
[05:16] like tick here if you feel confident,
[05:19] etc. Platforms like, absorb LMS, adapt
[05:22] quietly in the background. Why does this
[05:24] work? It reduces the cognitive load,
[05:26] which is great. We don’t want lots of
[05:28] information at once. We just want to be
[05:31] able to do our pathway without getting
[05:32] questions A, B, C. Are you confident?
[05:35] Are you confused? And that’s what we’re
[05:37] going down. We’re going down the path of
[05:39] seeing how the learner is doing as they
[05:41] go along. Have they done the quiz well?
[05:42] Do they need more time? Etc. The
[05:44] learners have enough to worry about.
[05:46] They focus on the learning, not the
[05:48] system. Do you know what I mean? But why
[05:50] does this fail? I think it fails when
[05:51] adaptation becomes too aggressive. I
[05:54] think if people feel rushed about
[05:55] important concepts or instantly
[05:57] corrected, I think it kind of just
[05:59] creates anxiety instead of the support.
[06:01] So fourth trend is proving it works, not
[06:04] just clicks. Completion rates to be
[06:07] honest are officially boring. So imagine
[06:09] a gym saying 97% of our users have
[06:12] watched the workout video. Great. But
[06:13] did they get any stronger? Great. We’ve
[06:15] got 97% completion rate. But are they
[06:18] actually building muscle? or are they
[06:19] actually reaching their fitness goals?
[06:21] What leaders want now is that it to see
[06:22] that it’s actually worked. So now
[06:24] instead of just tracking completion
[06:26] rates, learning management systems are
[06:28] tracking things like sales performance,
[06:30] customer satisfaction, productivity,
[06:33] errors or complaints allin one. So now
[06:35] companies are using, you know, learning
[06:37] management systems to connect learning
[06:39] data with real learning business data.
[06:42] So people that completed this learning
[06:44] pathway for example closed deals faster,
[06:46] made fewer mistakes or on boarded
[06:49] quicker. That’s what we want to get out
[06:50] of it. That’s the big difference and why
[06:52] this works. Because great we have
[06:54] learning and we have online courses but
[06:56] completion rates don’t mean anything if
[06:58] we don’t get any difference in that
[07:00] learner. In other words, it’s more about
[07:01] the business outcomes than just the
[07:03] learning activity. But why could this
[07:05] fail? It fails when you know businesses
[07:07] for example choose metrics over context.
[07:10] And sometimes not everything is valuable
[07:12] or easy to measure. You can agree on
[07:14] that productivity. It can be hard to
[07:16] measure. I think the bad majors can be
[07:17] more dangerous than no metrics at all.
[07:20] So again, it’s an example. It’s not
[07:22] looking at how many times somebody has
[07:24] gone to the gym. It’s about that time
[07:25] that they actually there are they
[07:27] getting fitter. So we really need to be
[07:28] careful with that. This is an ongoing
[07:30] trend that we’re building and building.
[07:32] Now we’ve covered four different online
[07:35] learning trends. Number five, real
[07:37] people over polish. I mean basically,
[07:39] yeah, great. You know, online courses
[07:40] are really good if you want a structured
[07:42] way to learn, but sometimes just a quick
[07:44] screen record does the job with a real
[07:46] person. We’re moving less from corporate
[07:48] TV and more like creators. I, for one,
[07:51] do a lot of screen records where, you
[07:52] know, I need to show something quickly.
[07:53] This is how you use the system, quick
[07:55] screen record, a few minutes, send over,
[07:57] job done. I mean, I don’t know if
[07:58] everybody would agree with this, but I
[07:59] rather just if we need something quick,
[08:01] even if I look slightly awkward, voice
[08:03] is weird, um, just a quick video to show
[08:05] you what needs to be done, then real
[08:07] person just showing you scrolling their
[08:09] screen on a webcam or whatever, really
[08:11] does the job. And, you know, obviously
[08:13] tools do do this. Articulate 360, which
[08:15] is more for advanced e-learning
[08:17] designers. I’ve done a video on that as
[08:19] well in the past. Um, they have screen
[08:20] recording, but you can just do it, you
[08:21] know, on your Mac or your PC as you
[08:23] normally would. And why does it work?
[08:25] Because people just build trust. But
[08:26] then also looking at the other spectrum,
[08:29] this could fail because authentic
[08:30] becomes careless where you’re simply
[08:32] just not even caring about what you’re
[08:34] sending or what you’re doing. That’s the
[08:36] kind of worry or the boundary there. You
[08:38] know, if you start to send poor audio
[08:40] structure, everybody else starts to do
[08:41] the same. And he said, “We don’t know
[08:43] what is quality anymore.” And sometimes
[08:46] it becomes unclear. And sometimes you do
[08:48] need a real pathway. I personally think
[08:50] it comes down to the topic and what you
[08:52] need. But I definitely think the real
[08:54] person more content creation rather than
[08:57] corporate, you know, online learning
[08:59] training is definitely a trend. So those
[09:01] are my top five online learning trends.
[09:04] [music] What do you guys think? Is there
[09:06] any in there that I’ve missed? More
[09:07] importantly, let me know in the comments
[09:09] below. I’ve got lots of different online
[09:11] learning videos for you guys to check
[09:13] [music] out. I will pop them straight
[09:15] after this. If you did like this video,
[09:16] do give me a like. Thank you so [music]
[09:18] much, guys. Don’t forget to subscribe
[09:19] for weekly updates. Have a really great
[09:21] day, everyone. Thank [music] you.
[09:23] Goodbye.
