[00:00] Have you ever met someone who seems to
[00:02] learn anything super quickly? A new
[00:04] language, a new software tool, a musical
[00:07] instrument? Regardless what you throw at
[00:10] them, they just learn it right away.
[00:12] What if I told you that their secret
[00:15] isn’t that they’re smarter? What if
[00:17] they’re simply better at learning?
[00:19] That’s where metacognition comes in.
[00:22] Metacognition is often described as
[00:24] thinking about thinking. But what does
[00:27] that actually mean? Imagine two people
[00:30] preparing for the same exam. They both
[00:32] have 3 days to prepare and they both
[00:35] have the exact same materials, books,
[00:37] and resources to get ready. At this
[00:40] point you might think, “They’re equally
[00:42] prepared, aren’t they?” But what if I
[00:44] told you that one of them is guaranteed
[00:47] to get a higher grade on that exam? Not
[00:50] because they consumed more knowledge or
[00:53] they were gifted with superhuman memory,
[00:56] but because while studying, they asked
[00:58] some key questions. Questions like, “Do
[01:02] I really understand this concept? Why do
[01:05] I keep making mistakes on this topic?
[01:07] And is this study method actually
[01:09] helping me learn?”
[01:11] Those questions are examples of
[01:13] metacognition. It’s the ability to step
[01:16] outside your learning process and
[01:18] observe it. In simple terms,
[01:20] metacognition means being aware of how
[01:23] you learn, not just what you’re
[01:25] learning.
[01:26] Metacognition usually involves three
[01:28] activities. First, planning. Before
[01:30] learning, you decide on an approach. For
[01:33] example, “I’ll start with the basics and
[01:35] then test myself with practice
[01:37] questions.” Second, monitoring. While
[01:40] learning, you check your understanding.
[01:43] You might ask, “Can I explain this
[01:45] concept in my own words? Or am I
[01:48] actually understanding this or just
[01:50] recognizing it?”
[01:52] And third, adjusting. If something isn’t
[01:55] working, you change your strategy.
[01:57] Instead of rereading notes for the fifth
[02:00] time, you might switch to practice
[02:02] exercises, flash cards, or teaching the
[02:05] concept to someone else.
[02:07] Let’s look at an example. Say we have
[02:09] two learners.
[02:11] One of them says, “I studied for 4 hours
[02:14] today.” The other says, “I studied for 4
[02:17] hours, but I noticed I couldn’t remember
[02:19] key concepts, so I switched from
[02:21] rereading to self-testing.”
[02:24] The difference isn’t effort, it’s
[02:26] awareness. The second learner is
[02:28] actively managing their learning
[02:30] process. That’s metacognition in action.
[02:33] Why it matters. Research consistently
[02:36] shows that metacognition skills are
[02:39] strongly linked to learning success
[02:41] because the most effective learners
[02:43] don’t just spend more time learning.
[02:45] They spend time figuring out what helps
[02:48] them learn best. So, what is
[02:51] metacognition? Simply put, it’s the
[02:54] ability to examine your own thinking
[02:56] from a detached viewpoint. It’s the
[02:58] process of asking questions like, “Do I
[03:01] really understand this? Why am I
[03:04] struggling with this? Or is this
[03:06] approach helping me achieve the result I
[03:08] want?”
[03:09] By regularly evaluating your thoughts,
[03:12] decisions, and learning strategies, you
[03:14] can identify what’s working, what isn’t,
[03:17] and what needs to change. That’s why
[03:20] metacognition is considered such an
[03:22] important skill. Not because it makes
[03:24] learning easier, but because it helps
[03:27] you learn more effectively.
